Our client owns a residential property, with a garage, in Falmouth. Like so many garages constructed in Cornwall over the years, the existing roof at the time of enquiry, consisted of corrugated cement sheeting. Ahead of the planned renovations to the garage, the cement sheeting needed to be sampled and tested to confirm if it contained asbestos.

Asbestos Sampling and Testing

After an initial consultation, Scientific Services’ P402 qualified asbestos surveyor attended site. He sampled the garage roof whilst adhering to HSG 248 guidelines. The samples were then transported back to our in-house asbestos testing laboratory for analysis. We were able to prioritise the sample collected and the report was issued quickly following our site visit. This ensured that our client was informed and able to move their project forward to the next step.

Asbestos Removal Project Management

Following a positive result, our client decided to appoint us to project manage the removal of the asbestos cement sheeting from their garage. Initially, we put out a tender request to a number of approved, licensed asbestos removal contractors. We then assessed each returned quotation against parameters such as price, availability and suitably of method statements.

After selecting a successful bid, we issued a quotation to our client for the works. To ensure transparency and clarity we split the fees for the removal and analytical cover within our documentation.

A mutually convenient date for the works was agreed and our asbestos consultant attended site to manage the safe removal of the asbestos identified. They ensured that all necessary site arrangements were in place and supervised the works throughout. This provided assurance that best practice techniques were adopted at all times.

On completion of the removal works, a visual inspection was completed to confirm that all asbestos had been successfully removed from the garage and its surrounding area. Reassurance air tests were also run to test the asbestos fibre levels within the air. The results were favourable and both tests passed; concluding that the area was safe to reoccupy.

Before leaving site our consultant provided all site hand over documentation and UKAS accredited test reports to our client for their records.
