About Legionella monitoring

Accurate results - Accessible data logs - Managing corrective action

There are many ways to prevent Legionella bacteria growth. Your Legionella risk assessment will confirm those relevant to your site. Ongoing monitoring is likely to be one of them. This often falls into two categories: temperature monitoring and water testing.

Temperature monitoring

There are two options for completing temperature monitoring. Your preferred approach is likely to be subject to your available free time and skill set.

Do it yourself - We can train you to test the temperature of your water systems. We would supply a calibrated thermometer for this purpose. This helps to ensure that you collect accurate results. If you’ve appointed us to complete your risk assessment you have access to our customer portal. We also provide guidance about how to enter the data collected into this system. One of our P901 qualified consultants would provide training at your site.

Appoint Scientific Services - We can complete your temperature monitoring. Using a calibrated thermometer, one of our consultants can test your system. We immediately enter all data collected into our customer portal using tablets. This ensures accurate results and complete records. It also frees up your time to focus on your business.

Our customer portal logs all data collected and plots the results on graphs. These show, at a glance, any out of tolerance results on your personalised dashboard.

Our team can analyse the results and recommend appropriate corrective action. They quickly resolve the issue and make your water system safe. This ensures that you are legally compliant.

Water testing

Different sites, legally, need to complete different water tests. Their required frequency is also subject to the type of business that you run. Your Legionella risk assessment will detail what you need at your site. It is likely to be a combination of the tests below.

  • Legionella testing
  • Total viable counts at 22 & 37 degrees Celsius
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Scientific Services’ water sampling and testing services will provide accurate results. It equips you with the information needed to manage Legionella within your water systems.

Water sampling

Our P901 qualified consultants will sample your water systems ensuring that:

  • We use the correct, sterile sample bottles to collect and store samples for each of the above tests.
  • We collect the required water volumes.
  • We maintain recommended breathing spaces in all water samples.
  • We store samples at the required temperatures.

Our mobile laboratories provide logistics for transporting samples to UKAS accredited laboratories. This ensures that we test your samples within permitted time frames.

Water testing results

We have a rigorous supplier approval process and robust quality checking systems. This ensures that our water testing services provide results you can trust.

On completion of the tests, we provide UKAS accredited test reports. The results provided by our approved suppliers can be confusing. We review the reports, upload the results to our customer portal and flag up problem results. This breaks down the jargon and provides a simple, in or out of tolerance outcome.

Your personal dashboard will provide a visual overview of your compliance status.

Our reviewing and notification system will:

  • Prevent poor results going unnoticed.
  • Removes the potential for misinterpretation of results.
  • Recommends the best corrective action.
  • Helps to ensure that you act on your results.

This provides you with peace of mind that you are taking the right next steps. Crucial in maintaining safety and compliance.

How long do the tests take?

Strong working relationships with UKAS accredited laboratories ensure fast turnarounds on results.

We have service level agreements which ensure we get results within agreed time frames.

The lead times for the tests vary:

  • Legionella testing - 14 days
  • Total viable counts at 27 and 37 degree Celsius - 5 days
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa- 5 days

These time frames include our management teams’ quality check. Once checked, we will email your report and upload it to your portal. If your results are a problem, then we will recommend any required remedial action at this point.
